Opal Nelson, 85, of Lisbon, ND died Monday, July 19, 2010 at Lisbon Area Health Services in Lisbon, ND.
Opal was born March 30, 1925 at Osakis, MN to Arthur and Judith (Mikkelson) Vangstad. She grew up and attended country school near Osakis and graduated from the Osakis High School. She attended Valley City Teachers College where she received her Bachelors Degree in education. Opal taught at Ayr, ND, Hawley, MN, Forman, ND, Big Bend Township and also substituted in Lisbon, ND.
She married Arnold Nelson on December 26, 1954 at Osakis, MN and resided on their family farm east of Lisbon. Opal was a dedicated farm wife and devoted mother and grandmother. Opal and Arnold moved into their current residence in Lisbon in November of 1991.
Opal was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon, ND, where she was active in the Deborah Circle, Sunday School, Quilting Ladies, and Prayer Shawl Ministry. She was also involved with the 4-H, the Ransom County Fair and Lisbon Senior Citizens Center.
She enjoyed her family, sewing, quilting, knitting, gardening, canning, baking, playing cards and traveling.
Opal is survived by her husband, Arnold of Lisbon; children, Jeffrey Nelson of Minnetonka, MN, Carol Johnson of Berlin, ND, Cheryl Nelson of Grand Rapids, ND and Tim (LeAnn) Nelson of Lisbon; 14 grandchildren;11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Don Vangstad of Long Prairie, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Edna Hawkins, Ruth Whitmore and Marlys Vangstad; one brother, Julian Bud Vangstad; and by her son-in-law, Greg Johnson.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 10am in Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon with Rev. Norm Anderson and Rev. David Killeen officiating. Jan Hansen was the organist and soloist was Larry Ketterling. ND. Pallbearers were her grandchildren. Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon, ND.
