There was a great birthday party for little Evel Knievel, Dexter Hoenhause, who turned 6 Saturday, July 24th. The party was held at his folk’s, Mitch and Heidi Hoenhause, with the weather as perfect as it could get -- maybe a few rain drops to stop combiners.

Scott Sorby’s, Ruth Berg, Marilyn Sorby, Harv, Jody and Andy Hoenhause and families, Tiff Quast, Sheldon and Alicia Felend, Irene Hoenhause telling of Dexter giving this rover a low down on how to fix stuff. She could not get the handles of a weeder together. He told her, “Get some WD-40 and that will fix it!” At 5 he runs everything with a motor in it and takes four-year-old Sophy for rides to this Grams house where her crocheting circles of knits is a interest as they slip in the bedroom where she does the work and sees how much she got done on theirs. Each one of the 14 want one and so Christmas it will be. Happy Day Dexter! Brandon, Carter and Brooke Hoenhause kept things alive on the gorgeous deck with the rest of the kids overlooking the gorgeous Valley on Saturday with Grams enjoying it, too.

This rover asked 4 year old Sophy to get her the hanky on the bed. She stated, “What’s a hanky?” Irene opened a drawer and showed her.

All who are in anticipation of a birthday take heed. They come and surprises are a joy. Wednesday at LAHS Nick Anderson with a huge smile handed this rover a cupcake with a candle on it, gift card they made and a birthday card. He was so happy to do this but we did not find a match to light the candle on the cupcake. It was precious. Everyone sang happy birthday and Pastor Carlson of Fort Ransom went into his sermon on Martha and Mary. Would you believe Jesus chose the one who washed his feet, not the one that slaved away at the housework, etc. and complained of the lazy one? Pastor Carlson gave the same sermon at Maryhill the day before and did a great job. His son Paul was with him in Enderlin. There was also communion there and it is thanks to the Pastor for coming and everyone else. It was super.

Then came the day of this rover’s birthday, born July 23, 1926 in the sandhills. She was born in the same house her Dad Ted Hoaby was. No hospital in those days but a doctor did come out and Grandma Bertina Larson. Now at 84 her fingers still work. She had a distraction before her day so was kept up. A zzzz-zzzz-zzzz by her bed four in the morn made her wake up only to see black wings, flapping past her head hitting the window. Up she came and shut the door. After it got daylight she searched the bedroom to no avail. Then sealed it. She went to bed that night but at 1:30 made her way to the bathroom. There in the stool lay eight-inch black wings floating around. She slammed the stood down. The Lord must have decided to leave the cover up before she went to bed which saved the day. She waited until seven in the morn and called son Harvey and also Andy in case one didn’t come, the other would. In comes Harv with a net. Irene put a patch on it, gave him a glove and in he went to capture the bat that was keeping her from her sleep. He gently lifted it out, carried it outside and lay it on the grass. End of that story. Then Arnie Amundsen decided to take in the “Beauty and the Beast” and off to LaMoure. It was great and the costumes were out of this world. At one time this rover had played for one of those shows. She decided to shake hands with everyone in it which were lined up outside on this beautiful night. Midnite came sooner than you think but no bats in the house so sleep came. Then Friday the birthday and telephone rang from 7 to 10:30 and she answered it from the bed. Harv and Kathy came into the house twice but left as she was on the phone. Then Kathy called and asked if this rover would meet them at the golf course, Harv again slipped in to see if she got the message. She did and off at 12:30. “I, stated sister Ilene, wanted to buy dinner, too”. He stated she could come too, but Irene in her dazed “bat” manner did not get in touch with her. She and Irene are the only two left in the Hoaby family, losing four brothers, Norm, Marv, Ernest and Jesse. She thought it would be the three people for lunch but in comes all of Harvey’s kids and their kids which was super. One missing. The main instigator there, Larry Lesmann, had everyone singing the birthday song so it’s thanks to him and all the rest. He can sing, too as well as give you good service.

By the way, at the hospital Nursing Home, Arnie sang Irene’s favorite song, “What A Day This Will Be” and it is thanks to him. Then this rover slipped home from the golf course, made buns, bars and homegrown ice cream and called the Carter’s, Ruth Carlblom and Evelyn Hitchcock to come out and have some. Alice Hiegelke was called also and the family but they were at work and not going to stop for lunch. A video was played of Leo Johnson on the banjo, Rich Ronning on the guitar and this rover on the large accordion at the Nursing Home where Dr. Sheets’ office is now. It was a great day and thanks to all.

Linda and Gerald Schjelderup called singing Happy Birthday: Gerald was working with the Gideons and the Bible. They reside in Moorhead and go to a large church there. They are planning on coming for the birthday party of the month at Maryhill the 29th. Pastor John states they will still be on their Indiana trip so can’t make his fiddle numbers and singing. But he did slip to the Valley and had a practice session at this rover’s with two new numbers so hoped to play them the next day at Americana where his Aunt lives. Irene and the Pastor put on the show with a great crowd. Lewis Lubca was in attendance also. Then he called his wife Lorraine and she brought Brian for a great supper at a Chinese Restaurant where the daughter, Emilie, works. The new Catholic church where the Clarks attend was surveyed and it is gorgeous and huge. Pastor John started out in the Catholic religion. All in all it was a great playing session and visiting session afterwards. Thanks to all that came and the rides this rover secured.

Arnie Amundsen had tree branches but all else was OK in the storm. This rover did not wake up until morning and her yard covered with down trees and branches, plus no electricity, garage door would not open so she had to take the pickup to play at 8:30 only to hear Pastor Killeen gunning her down to play because all the residents of Parkside were at the Trinity Church. She crawled in the dark up the steps as no juice was on and found the piano and went to work for a couple hours before heading to the LAHS to play where Pastor Isaacson was on with the story of the Good Samaritan. He did a good job and sang with Arnie some great songs. Thanks to all that came and it was daylight by 10:30 so all went well.

Ruth Carlblom had a neighbor’s tree slash the corner of her house but she has to pay for that “Happy wanderer” tree doing damage. Her neighbor was great, Jesse Tooley. He came and fixed the damage with no charge and stated, “What are neighbor’s for?”

Brandon Hoenhause, and Sheldon Felend zipped into Irene’s and did not take their boots off. Irene handed one a mop the other a broom and a laughing session took place as they cleaned the floor and a great visit besides lunch took place. Brandon loved Norann Carter’s cupcakes so all was well. Carter Hoenhouse slipped in and demonstrated he understands how to fix things. Had all three of Irenes outfits going in record time.

Oh, my aching back. Irene had “bats” but sister Ilene had snakes. One just as bad as the other. Her water kept running in the bathroom. She took the tank cover off and a snakes head popped up at her. She had nerve enough to get a glove and twist him around to get him loose from the inside fixings. He came out with a part of on him but did she cut the snake up to get the ring off???

Happy Day to Alethe Krause who has a birthday a day after this rover and her family and friends are gathering Sunday for a great party as she too is 84 and a building partner of this rovers. She also was a Kitchenaire for years when she abided in Lisbon. She and Dad Noah Joubert went fishing years ago. She caught the fish and he got skunked. Now she forgets memories and told of taking Keith’s out for their anniversary gift. Alethe spent most of her week in the country at daughter Helen’s place. They had yard sales getting rid of unused stuff over the past six years. Alethe has stuff in storage in a building but she does not drive so has a problem getting there in all the traffic. There are chickens at Helens but they can’t even donate them (eggs) to the shelter because they have to be candled. Like Alethe stated, we use to gather them, put them in a crate and off to town to sell them. ?Now she sorts them, weighs them and gets the right color together and counts them. They have mixed chickens so the eggs go from dark brown to light and even some blue - green ones. She states they eat a lot of eggs so lucky to have hens. Happy Day Alethe -- Yes I still write for the papers but told them to find someone else as it’s been 48 years and age is creeping up on me. No luck!!!
